Publications by Chinese researchers in scientific journals have dramatically increased over the past decade; however, academic misconduct also becomes more prevalent in the country. The aim of this prospective study was to understand the perceptions of Chinese biomedical researchers towards academic misconduct and the trend from 2010 to 2015. A questionnaire comprising 10 questions was designed and then validated by ten biomedical researchers in China. In the years 2010 and 2015, respectively, the questionnaire was sent as a survey to biomedical (...) researchers at teaching hospitals, universities, and medical institutes in mainland China. Data were analyzed by the Chi squared test, one-way analysis of variance with the Tukey post hoc test, or Spearman’s rank correlation method, where appropriate. The overall response rates in 2010 and 2015 were 4.5% and 5.5%, respectively. Data from 15 participants in 2010 were invalid, and analysis was thus performed for 1263 participants. Among the participants, 54.7% thought that academic misconduct was serious-to-extremely serious, and 71.2% believed that the Chinese authorities paid no or little attention to the academic misconduct. Moreover, 70.2 and 65.2% of participants considered that the punishment for academic misconduct at the authority and institution levels, respectively, was not appropriate or severe enough. Inappropriate authorship and plagiarism were the most common forms of academic misconduct. The most important factor underlying academic misconduct was the academic assessment system, as judged by 50.7% of the participants. Participants estimated that 40.1% of published scientific articles were associated with some form of academic misconduct. Their perceptions towards academic misconduct had not significantly changed over the 5 years. Reform of the academic assessment system should be the fundamental approach to tackling this problem in China. (shrink)

Recent research has relied on trolley-type sacrificial moral dilemmas to study utilitarian versus nonutili- tarian modes of moral decision-making. This research has generated important insights into people’s attitudes toward instrumental harm—that is, the sacrifice of an individual to save a greater number. But this approach also has serious limitations. Most notably, it ignores the positive, altruistic core of utilitarianism, which is characterized by impartial concern for the well-being of everyone, whether near or far. Here, we develop, refine, and validate a (...) new scale—the Oxford Utilitarianism Scale—to dissociate individual differences in the ‘negative’ (permissive attitude toward instrumental harm) and ‘positive’ (impartial concern for the greater good) dimensions of utilitarian thinking as manifested in the general population. We show that these are two independent dimensions of proto-utilitarian tendencies in the lay population, each exhibiting a distinct psychological profile. Empathic concern, identification with the whole of humanity, and concern for future generations were positively associated with impartial beneficence but negatively associated with instrumental harm; and although instrumental harm was associated with subclinical psychopathy, impartial beneficence was associated with higher religiosity. Importantly, although these two dimensions were independent in the lay population, they were closely associated in a sample of moral philosophers. Acknowledging this dissociation between the instrumental harm and impartial beneficence components of utilitarian thinking in ordinary people can clarify existing debates about the nature of moral psychology and its relation to moral philosophy as well as generate fruitful avenues for further research. Discrete choice experiments—selecting the best and/or worst from a set of options—are increasingly used to provide more efficient and valid measurement of attitudes or preferences than conventional methods such as Likert scales. Discrete choice data have traditionally been analyzed with random utility models that have good measurement properties but provide limited insight into cognitive processes. We extend a well-established cognitive model, which has successfully explained both choices and response times for simple decision tasks, to complex, multi-attribute discrete choice data. The (...) fits, and parameters, of the extended model for two sets of choice data (involving patient preferences for dermatology appointments, and consumer attitudes toward mobile phones) agree with those of standard choice models. The extended model also accounts for choice and response time data in a perceptual judgment task designed in a manner analogous to best–worst discrete choice experiments. We conclude that several research fields might benefit from discrete choice experiments, and that the particular accumulator-based models of decision making used in response time research can also provide process-level instantiations for random utility models. The enhancement debate in neuroscience and biomedical ethics tends to focus on the augmentation of certain capacities or functions: memory, learning, attention, and the like. Typically, the point of contention is whether these augmentative enhancements should be considered permissible for individuals with no particular “medical” disadvantage along any of the dimensions of interest. Less frequently addressed in the literature, however, is the fact that sometimes the _diminishment_ of a capacity or function, under the right set of circumstances, could plausibly contribute (...) to an individual's overall well-being: more is not always better, and sometimes less is more. Such cases may be especially likely, we suggest, when trade-offs in our modern environment have shifted since the environment of evolutionary adaptation. In this article, we introduce the notion of “diminishment as enhancement” and go on to defend a _welfarist_ conception of enhancement. We show how this conception resolves a number of definitional ambiguities in the enhancement literature, and we suggest that it can provide a useful framework for thinking about the use of emerging neurotechnologies to promote human flourishing. Ce livre propose d'aborder la pensée de Charles Taylor par ce qu'il reconnaît être son centre de cohérence : "l'horizon moral de signification". D'entrée de jeu, il situe assez clairement Taylor dans le vaste horizon de la philosophie morale contemporaine. Le texte pose bien l'originalité de la conception taylorienne de l'ontologie ; ses idées d'incarnations, d'engagement et la relation incontournable du moi. Sans complaisance, il montre le rôle central que joue cet horizon dans la philosophie morale taylorienne tout en exposant (...) les zones d'ombre où Taylor est moins clair ou moins explicite dans sa pensée. En illustrant clairement le lien entre l'horizon moral et l'identité d'une part, et celui entre les horizons et le dialogue interculturel d'autre part, le livre enrichit les analyses existantes sur le sujet. Il expose le dilemme taylorien entre contexte et universalisme. L'originalité de Taylor réside dans la manière dont il repose ce dilemme conservant en tension ces deux axes; orienter sa vie en fonction du bien nous oblige à naviguer entre deux eaux. La question du dialogue interculturel est naturellement incontournable dans le présent débat avec Taylor. Les considérations sur le "langage des contrastes" et le passage par les écrits de Raoul Fornet-Betancourt sont tout à fait pertinents. En effet, l'interculturalité ou le dialogue interculturel appelle un nouveau langage, mais les conditions de celui-ci? et son statut ontologique d'ailleurs ne sont pas clairement exprimées dans les écrits tayloriens. Et ils peuvent difficilement l'être, car cela demeure pour lui de l'ordre du mystère et du dévoilement. L'ouverture à l'autre et à l'altérité est un chemin qui mène à plusieurs inconnus et appelle ce que Taylor nomme une transformation."--Page 4 of cover. (shrink)

La pensée est un patrimoine discret et secret au point qu'elle n'est pas habituellement considérée comme un patrimoine au sens propre. Pourtant elle est à l'origine de tous les autres. Probablement sans l'exercice de cette faculté qui leur est propre, les êtres humains n'auraient jamais conçu leurs monuments extraordinaires ni leurs constructions admirables. Du plus petit phénomène jusqu'à la loi générale qui en coordonnerait les enchaînements, la recherche cultivée à l'intérieur de jardins divers et multiples tout le long de l'histoire (...) révèle un désir caché d'absolu. Comme si le jardinier dans l'aspiration d'élargir son horizon avait été amené à un certain moment à pousser les murs et à se retrouver chez le voisin, dans le monde et hors du monde par étapes successives. Un jeu de l'observation, de la mémoire et de l'imagination. En 2003, dans le cadre idéal de la Chartreuse de Valbonne, quelques représentants de disciplines diverses allaient reprendre ce jeu autour d'un thème aussi libre que contraignant tel que l'Espace Spirituel peut l'être. Quelques architectes, mathématiciens, musicologues, musiciens, et philosophes évoquent l'expression : Espace Spirituel chacun selon son angle de vue. L'idée d'Espace dans une cathédrale, dans le désert ou dans un chou fleur... Le Spirituel traverse les cultures du christianisme au judaïsme à l'indouisme. For decisions between many alternatives, the benchmark result is Hick's Law: that response time increases log-linearly with the number of choice alternatives. Even when Hick's Law is observed for response times, divergent results have been observed for error rates—sometimes error rates increase with the number of choice alternatives, and sometimes they are constant. We provide evidence from two experiments that error rates are mostly independent of the number of choice alternatives, unless context effects induce participants to trade speed for accuracy (...) across conditions. Error rate data have previously been used to discriminate between competing theoretical accounts of Hick's Law, and our results question the validity of those conclusions. We show that a previously dismissed optimal observer model might provide a parsimonious account of both response time and error rate data. The model suggests that people approximate Bayesian inference in multi-alternative choice, except for some perceptual limitations. (shrink)

Introduction With an ageing population, end-of-life care is increasing in importance. The present work investigated characteristics and time trends of older peoples' attitudes towards euthanasia and an end-of-life pill. Methods Three samples aged 64 years or older from the Longitudinal Ageing Study Amsterdam (N=1284 (2001), N=1303 (2005) and N=1245 (2008)) were studied. Respondents were asked whether they could imagine requesting their physician to end their life (euthanasia), or imagine asking for a pill to end their life if they became tired (...) of living in the absence of a severe disease (end-of-life pill). Using logistic multivariable techniques, changes of attitudes over time and their association with demographic and health characteristics were assessed. Results The proportion of respondents with a positive attitude somewhat increased over time, but significantly only among the 64–74 age group. For euthanasia, these percentages were 58% (2001), 64% (2005) and 70% (2008) (OR of most recent versus earliest period (95% CI): 1.30 (1.17 to 1.44)). For an end-of-life pill, these percentages were 31% (2001), 33% (2005) and 45% (2008) (OR (95% CI): 1.37 (1.23 to 1.52)). For the end-of-life pill, interaction between the most recent time period and age group was significant. Conclusions An increasing proportion of older people reported that they could imagine desiring euthanasia or an end-of-life pill. This may imply an increased interest in deciding about your own life and stresses the importance to take older peoples' wishes seriously. (shrink)

Le campus virtuel de la filière TIC de Limoges propose depuis 1998, via Internet, des formations diplômantes pour les TIC et par les TIC. Les 600 étudiants sont organisés en communautés virtuelles d'apprentissage. Les communautés virtuelles sont une forme de socialisation propre à Internet. Le travail de groupe évite le sentiment d'isolement et facilite les apprentissages. Les étudiants et les enseignants échangent et partagent au niveau de la communauté globale, au niveau des communautés de promotion et d'unité d'enseignement qui sont (...) des communautés de pratique. Ils pratiquent le travail collaboratif au niveau des communautés de travail, c'est-à-dire qu'ils mutualisent leurs compétences et coordonnent leurs actions pour mener à bien les apprentissages. Pour réussir ce travail collaboratif il ya des règles et une « nétiquette » à respecter. L'intelligence collective naît du travail en commun des étudiants en réseau.The virtual campus of the ICT sector offers Limoges since 1998, via the Internet, diploma courses for ICT and ICT. 600 students are organized in virtual learning communities. Virtual communities are a form of socialization own Internet. Group work prevents isolation and facilitates learning. Students and teachers exchange and share in the global community, community-level promotion and teaching unit which are communities of practice. They practice in collaborative working communities, that is to say, they pool their expertise and coordinate their actions to carry out learning. Résumé : Le thème de la Métaphysique de l’acte d’être a connu un succès jamais démenti au cours du siècle dernier, avec des auteurs comme Gilson, Maritain ou Fabro, pour ne citer que les plus célèbres. Pourtant, des questions de fond n’ont jamais reçu de réponse satisfaisante, et ont laissé le sentiment d’une doctrine inachevée et inachevable. Trois observations contribuent à cette insatisfaction : la quasi-absence d’une telle problématique chez Thomas d’Aquin, les désaccords entre certains points de la théorie ainsi (...) qu’entre les auteurs, et les incompatibilités avec certains thèmes centraux de la philosophie de Thomas d’Aquin. - Abstract: The theme of the Metaphysics of the act of being has known a never denied success over the last century, with authors like Gilson, Maritain or Fabro, to name only the most famous. Nevertheless, some important questions have never been fittingly answered, and have left the feeling of an unachieved and unachievable doctrine. Three observations contribute to this disappointment : a quasi-absence of such a problematic in Thomas Aquinas, contradictions between certain points of the theory as well as between the authors, and incompatibilities with certain central themes of the philosophy of Thomas Aquinas. Après avoir montré brièvement la place et le rôle de l'énigme en culture littéraire, cet article s'attache à montrer les procédés littéraires à l'oeuvre dans l'analyse augustinienne de deux grandes énigmes : l'homme-individu, l'homme-société. L'énigme qu'Augustin trouve au fond de l'homme, c'est d'abord une controversia , conflit qui le conduit à postuler la présence de ce qu'on appelle aujourd'hui l'inconscient ; mais ici l'herméneutique est menée avec des concepts littéraires et non médico-biologiques. D'autre part, les rapports sociaux de l'homme ne (...) sont pas analysés en termes de production, ni de pouvoir politique, mais plutôt en référence aux mythologies religieuses, c'est-à-dire en fonction de l'interprétation du Livre. Loin d'être économico-politique, le déchiffrage repose sur la manière dont Romains, Juifs, chrétiens, manichéens, donatistes lisent les signes de l'Ecriture. L'article s'achève enfin sur une brève description de l'épistémologie qui organise les lignes de force de cette herméneutique.After briefly showing the place and the role of the enigm in literary culture, this article goes on to show the literary procedures at work in the Augustinian analysis of two great enigmas : man-individual, man-society. The enigma which Augustin finds at the basis of man is first of all a controversia , a conflict which leads him to postulate the presence of what today is called the unconscious. But here hermeneutics is pursued with literary rather than with medico-biological concepts. Moreover, man's social relations are not analysed in terms of production, nor of political power, but with reference to religious mythologies, that is, as a function of the interpretation of the Book. Far from being an economic and political interpretation, the interpretation here is based on the way Romans, Jews, Christians, Manicheans, and Donatists read the signs of scripture. L’intention de cette étude est de montrer que la seconde section de Vérité et méthode élabore, à partir d’une réflexion sur l’histoire, une interrogation sur la « subjectivité » dont l’être est de participer à ce qui se présente. Le sujet a ainsi le statut de theoros. Cette interrogation s’articule en trois moments qui sont autant d’étapes approfondissant le questionnement sur la « subjectivité » : le cercle herméneutique, qui montre le caractère dérivé de l’opposition sujet/objet ; le préjugé, qui (...) met en évidence l’enracinement historique du « sujet » ; la dialectique de la question et de la réponse qui révèle le « sujet » comme une question à lui-même.The purpose of this article is to show that the second section of Truth and Method elaborates an interrogation on « subjectivity », based on a meditation about history. Récusant l'opposition de Ricoeur entre la compréhension des structures (imputée à Lévi-Strauss) et l'intelligence herméneutique (qu'il promeut lui-même), ainsi que l'assimilation de la première à la science et de la seconde à la philosophie, cet article montre que le structuralisme n'est ni science ni philosophie mais méthode, et qu'en tant que tel il peut être assumé autant par la science que par la philosophie. Il le montre à partir de l'exemple du mythe d'Oedipe, analysé successivement selon divers points de vue: (...) anthropologique (Lévi-Strauss), psychanalytique (Freud), "poétique" (c'est-à-dire relevant de la théorie littéraire) et philosophique. Il le montre ensuite en appliquant la méthode à un discours philosophique particulier, celui de Platon, au niveau d'un mythe raconté dans le "Gorgias"; puis à celui de la section du "Phèdre" opposant rhétorique et philosophie; et enfin à celui du corpus intégral de l'esthétique platonicienne. Disturbance-generated biomass results from endogenous and exogenous natural and cultural disturbances that affect the health and productivity of forest ecosystems. These disturbances can create large quantities of plant biomass on predictable cycles. A systems analysis model has been developed to quantify aspects of system capacities (harvest, transportation, and processing), spatial aspects of the biomass generation process, and deterioration impacts on biomass quality in the various inventory states (field stands, field-harvested inventories, transportation prepared inventories, and production facility inventories). Optimal decision alternatives (...) can be used to guide responses to reclamation, utilization, mitigation, and control. This is particularly advantageous in insect and disease outbreaks, in which the process may last several years, with varying levels of intensity. The prescriptive system description, assuming capacities are fixed, results in a linear programming model. The time-dependent capacity decision model results in a mixed-integer programming model. Après en avoir décrit les grandes lignes, il en propose une critique concernant tout d'abord des problèmes techniques liés à la documentation et à l'utilisation des sources; puis des problèmes de contenu, tant du point de vue formel (contradictions, définitions douteuses ou manquantes) qu'en rapport à divers problèmes: la caractérisation du champ des études sur l'homme, la terminologie de base, les concepts fondamentaux (masculinité, féminité) et le contexte social (...) d'une éventuelle transformation de l'identité masculine. La conclusion souligne que les défauts relevés peuvent découler du caractère innovateur de l'ouvrage et de l'immensité de la documentation pertinente. (shrink)

Cet ouvrage propose d'unifier les sciences de l'homme entre elles et avec la philosophie en les articulant grâce à trois concepts fondamentaux: forme, sens et historicité.

L’objet de cet essai est l’accueil des entités mathématiques dans l’architecture des modes d’existence proposée par Bruno Latour dans le cadre de son ontologie pluraliste du monde moderne [Latour 2012]. Les travaux de Reviel Netz sur l’émergence des mathématiques grecques [Netz 1999] et de Charles Sanders Peirce sur la dimension diagrammatique de l’activité mathématique [Peirce 1933-1958], [Peirce 1976] sont employés pour proposer une réponse dans le cadre d’une conception empirique des mathématiques basée sur la notion d’expérience chère à William James (...) [James 2007] et inspirée par certains aspects de la philosophie de Per Martin-Löf [Martin-Löf 1987]. Cette approche permet de penser la solide certitude dont la démonstration dote les résultats mathématiques tout en invalidant son interprétation comme la marque d’un accès direct à une vérité absolue et transcendante. I start from Phillips' discussion of Rhees's dissatisfaction with the idea of a language‐game. Then, from a rereading of Moore, I go on to exemplify interconnected uses of the expressions “language‐game,”“recurrent procedure,”“world‐picture,”“formal procedure,”“agreement in judgment,”“genre picture” and “form of life.” The discussion is related to sense perception, our knowledge of time and space, and the picture‐theory. These topics connect with Wittgenstein's earlier treatment of the will – which changed markedly later. The subtext (in footnotes) confronts (i) the sceptical methods of (...) Descartes and Hume with the grammatical methods of Leibniz, Kant and Wittgenstein, and (ii) the realism of Leibniz and the Tractatus with the transcendental idealism of Kant. My conclusion is that, although the method of Wittgenstein's later work remains in a sense grammatical, (i) in its new form it can free us from the conviction that the intellect can and must resolve one way or the other the conflicts that arise in the course of the latter confrontation, and that (ii), although release from such a conviction is to be seen as the aim of philosophical discourse in general, it allows philosophy to retain its overriding significance. A positive element in that lies in the respect the method demands for that in a human life which is transcendental to the activity of scientific theorising: respect, therefore, for the unique perspective of the individual historical agent.
